The short version
Trello made boards famous, and it’s still easy to pick up. It has a huge range of add-ons and automations, and a Free plan that allows up to 10 collaborators per Workspace.
Sunrise starts from the same idea (a board for each project) but adds the pieces small Google Workspace teams tend to piece together by hand: a Today and Upcoming plan across every project, your calendar next to your tasks, and two-way sync with Google Tasks.
Where Sunrise is the better fit
- You need a calendar view without paying more. On Trello, Calendar, Timeline and Table views come with the Premium plan at $10 per user a month billed yearly. In Sunrise, list, kanban and calendar views are part of the Free plan.
- You plan across projects. Trello organizes work board by board. Sunrise adds Today and Upcoming views that pull tasks from every project, with your Google Calendar events alongside.
- You live in Gmail and Google Tasks. Tasks assigned to you appear in a Sunrise list in Google Tasks, so you can finish them from your phone or the Gmail sidebar. See the Google Tasks sync guide.
- You want a lower price per seat. Business is $2.99 per member a month billed yearly at early-bird pricing, and $5.99 after early access. That is compared with $5 for Trello Standard and $10 for Premium. Guests on shared projects are always free.
Where Trello is the better fit
- Add-ons and automation. Trello’s Power-Ups and automation rules cover many niche workflows that Sunrise doesn’t offer. Free allows 250 automation runs a month, Standard 1,000, and Premium unlimited.
- A Timeline view. Sunrise has no Gantt-style timeline yet.
- Not tied to Google. If your team doesn’t use Gmail and Google Calendar, Sunrise’s main advantage doesn’t apply.
Making the switch
Try Sunrise on one project: sign in with Google, create the project, add your tasks and invite a teammate. Every feature is open during early access, and the Free plan needs no credit card. See pricing for plans.
